Mac FAQ

AOE is not compatible with M1 Macintosh Devices as of software version 2.2.4.0.

Why am I seeing a message that AOE needs to be updated and how can I install AOE on macOS Catalina 10.15?

The latest macOS version 10.15 Catalina has been released. If you are installing AOE you might get a message stating the AOE is a malicious software and it needs to be updated. It is not malicious and as of now works in Catalina. You will have to go to System Preferences>Security & Privacy>General>and click “Open Anyway”. Allow all permissions and proceed with install. We are aware of the issue causing this flag from Apple and will address in the next update.

What does the message “Driver is installed but not available” mean?

When you see this message after installation, press “Try Again”.  In many cases, the audio driver will connect and AOE will launch correctly.  If you get the message again, please reboot your computer.  This is normal when installing audio drivers.

NOTE:   We are currently tracking an issue in MacOS 10.13 High Sierra and MacOS 10.14 Mojave where the new security features are causing issues with audio drivers on some computers.

If after rebooting you continue to see this error, the following solution has worked for some users:

1.) Navigate to your Applications -> AOE folder and use the Uninstaller to uninstall AOE from your system.

2.) Restart your computer.

3.) Navigate to System Preferences -> Security and Privacy Tab

4.) Near the bottom of the window you should see a section that says that the AOE application was blocked from installing.   Click “Allow” to allow AOE to install its virtual driver.

5.) Navigate to your downloads folder or visit aoesound.com to re-download and reinstall AOE.

Is AOE compatible with MacOS 10.14 Mojave?

AOE version 2.2.0.9 is compatible with MacOS 10.14 Mohave, previous versions of AOE are not compatible.  It should be noted however, that in this newest release of MacOS (as in MacOS 10.13), Apple has tightened some security settings that relate to Kernel Extensions like the DPSReflector Virtual Audio Driver.

When you install AOE you will be prompted to visit the System Preferences -> Security & Privacy panel and click “Allow” to let the AOE application to run.

If you upgrade to Mohave from a version of MacOS earlier than 10.13 High Sierra with AOE already installed, it may be necessary for you to visit the System Preferences -> Security & Privacy panel to “Allow” AOE to run.

Also, for DAOE to work properly in MacOS 10.14 Mohave it is necessary to give AOE permission to access the microphone.  This is due to heightened security and privacy settings in MacOS 10.14, not because AOE uses the microphone (which it does not.)

Be sure to click “Ok” when prompted to allow access to the microphone.

Why does AOEneed permission to access the microphone in MacOS 10.14 Mojave?

Due to elevated security features in MacOS 10.14 Mojave, it is necessary for users to give AOE permission to access the microphone.  AOE does not actually use the microphone, but the DPSReflector virtual audio driver acts as a system level input which triggers this new security measure.  Denying this permission will cause AOE to fail to produce audio output, i.e. there will be no sound.

So be sure to click “Ok” when prompted to allow access to the microphone.

I just upgraded to MacOS 10.14 Mojave and I don’t have any sound!  What do I do?

Due to elevated security features in MacOS 10.14 Mojave, it is necessary for users to give AOE permission to access the microphone. AOE does not actually use the microphone, but the DPSReflector virtual audio driver acts as a system level input which triggers this new security measure.  Denying this permission will cause AOE to fail to produce audio output, i.e. there will be no sound.

To fix this, open System Preferences, then open Security & Privacy settings.  Click “Privacy”.  Select Microphone from the list on the left and make sure that the checkbox to the left of AOE is checked.

I hear distortion!  What do I do?

Distortion may be caused by several factors.  However, these items should resolve most distortion problems:

  • Turn off Volume Boost in the SETTINGS tab.
  • If you are using one of the custom MacBook profiles, try switching to one of the Built-In City profiles.  Older MacBooks had more headroom than the newer models so those profiles may boost too much for your model.  All of the City profiles are compatible will all models and include a limiter to reduce distortion.
  • Check the settings in your music player.  Usually just lowering the volume in the player will solve distortion issues.

What are the Minimum System Requirements?

  • Compatible with OSX 10.13 or later
  • 64bit Intel Mac
  • 1GHz processor or better
  • 2Gb RAM
  • 20Mb hard drive space for installation
  • Internet connection for software activation and updates
  • Currently AOE only supports stereo audio devices. Devices with more than 2 output channels are not supported.

How do I Retrieve a Console Log for Technical Support

If in the unlikely case that our app on Mac is behaving in an unexpected way, our Support Staff may ask you to send us a Console Log.  This log can tell us more about what is going on behind the scenes and help us find a solution for the issue.

Using the Console on macOS Sierra and later

  1. Open the Console application (from the Utilities folder inside your Applications folder).
  2. Click the leftmost button in the toolbar to show the sidebar, if it’s hidden.
  3. Select All Messages in the tab bar.
  4. If the Activities button in the toolbar is enabled with a blue icon, click it to turn this off.
  5. Switch back to our AOE app, and try to trigger the issue. With any luck, this will print some output to the Console.
  6. Return to the Console, and select the recent error messages from the main window, or from the Menu Bar choose Edit ▸ Select All.
  7. From the Menu Bar, choose Edit ▸ Copy. Then, open the TextEdit application and Paste the copied logs into a new plain text document.
  8. Save the text document in .txt format, and attach this to your response so we can investigate further!

Why am I seeing a Facetime may interfere with AOE Audio Notification?

If you launch Facetime with AOE enabled, you may see a notification from our application that Facetime may interfere with AOE audio.

We have experienced a lowered volume phenomenon if using DPSReflector as the output option with Facetime.  We recommend choosing internal speakers if this issue occurs.

If you are experiencing another issue with your audio experience please contact us here.
